Composition | Use Lines to Lead a Viewer's Eye

Whether we’re reading someone’s handwriting, watching dancers, or following a roller coaster, our brains are wired to follow lines. It’s no different when viewing a photograph as lines create paths for the eye to follow.

When lines connect the foreground to the background of a scene, they help to create depth and dimensionality which draws the viewer into the image. A photo without lines can often appear chaotic and confusing. Fortunately, lines are all around us.

In the image below, the road, particularly the painted markings on the road, lead the viewer deeper into the image both visually and conceptually. Roads are inherently leading because they go somewhere, give us a feeling of motion.
